Cork

Online ordering for Cork takeaways and restaurants

Cork is Ireland's second food market, with a compact city centre, big suburbs and two large third-level campuses. Here's how that shapes takeaway ordering, and where your own ordering site earns its keep.

Cork takeaways sell into two very different areas: a dense city centre where most orders are a short walk or cycle away, and suburbs such as Ballincollig, Douglas, Bishopstown and Carrigaline where a delivery is a proper drive. Your own online ordering site lets you price those runs fairly, keep the customer relationship, and stop paying app commission on the regulars who already order from you every week.

Cork County is the second-largest food market in the country after Dublin, with under half Dublin’s number of food businesses but a much wider area to cover. The OpenStreetMap figures are a floor: smaller takeaways are often missing from the map.

The pressure on margins is real here too. The Irish Times reported in March 2026 that Jackie Lennox’s, one of Cork’s best-known chippers, had closed, in a piece about rising input, labour, energy and insurance costs across the sector.

Students, late nights and festival weekends

University College Cork and Munster Technological University bring a large student population into the city during term. Students tend to order late, in groups, and from their phones. That means:

  • Evening and weekend peaks that the kitchen has to absorb. A kitchen screen that keeps alarming until someone acknowledges the order helps on a busy night (on the Complete plan).
  • Event weekends. The Guinness Cork Jazz Festival runs from 22 to 26 October 2026, with events in nearly 80 venues around the city. Scheduled pre-orders let customers book a collection time instead of queueing.
  • Collection orders. Students who live near the city centre often collect. Collection isn’t affected by delivery-app driver availability, and every collection order on your own site is one you don’t pay app commission on.

What the apps cost a Cork takeaway

Uber Eats publishes its Irish rates: 30% when Uber delivers (33% on Uber One orders) and 13% when you deliver or the customer collects, plus a €650 activation fee (checked on 6 October 2026). RTÉ Brainstorm reported in 2025 that platforms take 25% to 35% of delivery orders.

On a €28 family order, 30% is €8.40. In the suburbs, where families order larger baskets, that adds up quickly. Run your own numbers in the commission calculator.

Delivery to the suburbs

Distance is the big difference between Cork and Dublin. A run from the city centre to Carrigaline or Ballincollig takes a driver away for much longer than a city-centre drop, so a flat fee loses money on the long runs. With OrdFox you set fee bands by distance from your shop, a minimum order, and an optional free-delivery threshold, and the fee is calculated at checkout. Your own drivers use the OrdFox driver app, and your customers follow the order with live tracking. Dispatch and tracking are included in every plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charge more for delivery to Ballincollig or Carrigaline than to the city centre?

Yes. OrdFox calculates the delivery fee by distance from your shop, in bands you set, so a longer run to a suburb costs more than a short city-centre drop. You can also set a minimum order and a free-delivery threshold.

Can I start with collection only in Cork?

Yes. Many takeaways start with collection and scheduled pre-orders on their own site, then add delivery with their own drivers later. Driver dispatch and live tracking are included when you're ready.

Can I take phone orders on the same system?

Yes. OrdFox includes a counter and phone POS that runs on any tablet, so phone, counter and online orders appear on one screen.
