A chipper’s best customers order the same thing every week, often by phone, and usually collect. Delivery apps were built for a different pattern, and they charge commission even when the customer walks in to collect. Your own online ordering site lets those regulars order direct, puts phone orders on the same screen, and keeps the margin in a business where costs have been climbing for years.
Chippers in Ireland: the numbers and the pressure
| Indicator | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Fish and chip shops mapped in the Dublin area | 147 | OpenStreetMap, Oct 2026 |
| ITICA members (Italian-Irish chipper families) | 200 (2011) | Irish Examiner |
| Sales lift from daily social posts at a Limerick chipper | nearly 40% | Irish Times, March 2026 |
Italian-Irish families have run chippers for well over a century; the Irish Traditional Italian Chippers Association (ITICA) said in 2011 that its member communities went back 125 years. In March 2026 the Irish Times described a sector under pressure from rising input, labour, energy and insurance costs, with closures including Jackie Lennox’s in Cork and Munchies in Bayside, Dublin. One owner told the paper she expected very few Italian families to be running chippers in 15 or 20 years.
The same report showed what works. At Rio’s Fish and Chips in Castletroy, Limerick, daily social media posts lifted sales by nearly 40%. At Amber Grill in Dublin, vegan options are about a quarter of sales. People follow chippers they like, and when they’re ready to order, the cheapest place to send them is your own site.
How chipper orders work
- Phone and collection first. OrdFox’s POS runs on any tablet, so staff take phone orders on the same screen as online orders. The kitchen sees one queue.
- Friday peaks. A kitchen screen that keeps alarming until someone acknowledges the order is on the Complete plan. When the queue is too long, you can pause online ordering for a while.
- Family deals. Build a family meal as one item with required choice steps.
- Scheduled orders. Customers can pre-order for a set collection time, which spreads the Friday rush.
- Delivery when you want it. If you deliver, fees are calculated by distance and your customers get live tracking. Dispatch and tracking are included on every plan.
Allergens on online orders
The FSAI says that for food ordered at a distance, allergen information must be available in writing before the order is placed, and again at delivery, in writing or verbally. Fish, gluten in batter and milk are common in a chipper menu. On your own site you can write the allergens into each item’s description; keep printed allergen information at the counter and with deliveries too.
What the apps cost a chipper
Uber Eats publishes its Irish rates: 30% when Uber delivers (33% on Uber One orders) and 13% when you deliver or the customer collects, plus a €650 activation fee (checked on 6 October 2026).
| Order | 30% (app delivers) | 13% (collection) |
|---|---|---|
| €14 single meal | €4.20 | €1.82 |
| €32 family order | €9.60 | €4.16 |
VAT is normally charged on top of commission. Put your own figures into the commission calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take phone orders on the same screen as online orders?
Yes. OrdFox includes a counter and phone POS that runs on any tablet. Staff key in phone and counter orders there, and they appear alongside orders from your own ordering site.
Is my own ordering site worth it if most of my customers collect?
Often more so. Collection orders on a delivery app still pay commission, for example 13% on Uber Eats Ireland when the customer collects. On your own site there's no app commission: a card order carries the per-order platform fee set out in your agreement, which includes card processing, and the customer pays you directly.
How do I show allergen information on online orders?
The FSAI says that for food ordered at a distance, allergen information must be available in writing before the order is placed and again at delivery, in writing or verbally. On your own ordering site you can write the allergens into each item's description, and keep printed allergen information for collection and delivery.
Can I sell family meal deals online?
Yes. Build a family deal as one menu item with required choice steps, for example choose four mains, chips and drinks, so the order arrives complete in the kitchen.
