Online ordering for Galway takeaways and cafés

Galway's food trade swings with the calendar: two university terms, a fortnight of Arts Festival and a week of Races every summer. Here's how to take orders through those peaks on your own channel.

Galway is a small city with a big calendar. Most of the year, takeaways and cafés serve students and residents; for a few weeks each summer, the city fills with visitors and every kitchen is stretched. Your own online ordering site, with scheduled pre-orders and collection slots, lets you take more of those orders without handing a share of each one to a delivery app.

Galway’s food business market in numbers

Indicator Galway Source
Food and beverage service enterprises (NACE 56), county 1,012 (2024) CSO BRA34
People working in those enterprises 10,156 CSO BRA34

of which takeaway and fast food / bakeries 63 / 9 OpenStreetMap

Compared with Limerick or Cork, Galway city has a high share of cafés and sit-down restaurants relative to fast-food outlets. That matters for online ordering: a café’s online orders are mostly collection and pre-orders rather than late-night delivery. The OpenStreetMap figures are a floor; smaller places are often missing.

The Galway calendar

When What happens What it means for orders
13 to 26 July 2026 (12 to 25 July 2027) Galway International Arts Festival Visitors on foot in the city centre; collection beats delivery
27 July to 2 August 2026 Galway Races Summer Festival at Ballybrit Evening peaks, groups, traffic on the east side of the city
September to May University of Galway and ATU terms Steady student demand, late weekend orders

During festival weeks, roads in and around the city centre are slow and every kitchen is busy at the same hours. Two features help most:

  • Scheduled pre-orders with slot limits. Customers choose a time when they order; you set the minimum notice and how many orders each slot can take.
  • Pausing orders. If the kitchen falls behind, pause ordering on your own site and switch it back on when you’ve caught up.

Gort and the Brazilian community

Census 2022 found that 13% of Gort’s population were Brazilian citizens, a figure the CSO singled out in its citizenship profile. The community grew from meat-plant workers recruited from Brazil, and today Gort has Brazilian shops and services, a weekly Mass in Portuguese and an annual quadrilha festival, according to Oi.ie.

For a Brazilian bakery, snack bar or restaurant in Gort or Galway, OrdFox has two practical advantages: support in Portuguese, and an ordering interface in Portuguese and English. Customers outside the town centre are spread out, so delivery fees calculated by distance from your shop are fairer than a single flat fee. There’s a Portuguese version of this page and a page for Brazilian restaurants.

What the apps cost

Uber Eats publishes its Irish rates: 30% when Uber delivers (33% on Uber One orders) and 13% when you deliver or the customer collects, plus a €650 activation fee (checked on 6 October 2026). On a €22 lunch order, 30% is €6.60. Try your own figures in the commission calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers pre-order for a set collection time during the Galway Races or Arts Festival?

Yes. OrdFox supports scheduled pre-orders, so customers pick a collection or delivery time when they order. You set the minimum notice and how many orders each time slot can take, which stops the kitchen being swamped at one time.

Can I pause online orders when the kitchen is overwhelmed?

Yes. You can pause ordering on your own site for a period and switch it back on when the rush eases, instead of letting orders pile up.

Do you work with businesses in Gort and Athenry, not just Galway city?

Yes. OrdFox is an online ordering system, so it works wherever your shop is. Delivery fees are calculated by distance from your shop, which suits towns where customers are spread over a wider area.

Is there support in Portuguese for Brazilian businesses in Galway and Gort?

Yes. OrdFox offers support in English and Portuguese, and the ordering and admin interface is available in both languages.
